Bunions

What Are Bunions?

A bunion is a bump that forms on the side of your foot, right at the base of your big toe. It happens when the big toe slowly starts to lean toward the smaller toes, which pushes the joint out of place. Over time, this can make the area sore, swollen, or stiff, and can even make it hard to find shoes that feel comfortable.

Why Do Bunions Happen?

Bunions can run in families, so sometimes it’s simply the way your feet are built. They can also be made worse by wearing tight or narrow shoes that squeeze the toes, or from conditions like flat feet or arthritis. Usually, bunions develop gradually, and without care, they can slowly become more noticeable and uncomfortable.

Ways to Manage Bunions Without Surgery

The good news is, not all bunions need surgery. Many people get relief from simple changes and treatments. Switching to shoes with a wide toe box, adding soft pads over the bump, or using custom shoe inserts (orthotics) can all help reduce pressure and pain. Applying ice after a long day, gentle stretching exercises, and over-the-counter pain relievers can also make a difference. If bunions are giving you trouble, a podiatrist can guide you toward the right plan to keep you active and comfortable.
